What can visitors see on the way?
Whakarewarewa Forest & Redwood Memorial Grove
Whakarewarewa Forest lies south east of Rotorua City and adjoins Whakarewarewa Thermal Village. Magnificent stand of Redwoods cover a six hectare corner of the forest near the Forest Visitors' Information Centre. Each year many thousands of visitors come to admire the sheer magnificence of this stately grove of trees and take advantage of the walking, mountain biking and horse riding tracks in the forest.
The Blue and Green Lakes
Two of the region's lakes have long held fascination for visitors and locals alike. The Blue Lake, Lake Tikitapu, is a favourite for water-skiers, kayakers and family relaxation. The Green Lake, Lake Rotokakahi, remains out of bounds as tapu (sacred), a rule which is respected by both Pakeha (European) and Maori alike.
Mt Tarawera Look-out and Landing
2km past the Buried Village is a roadside lookout offering spectacular views of Lake Tarawera and the mountain beyond. Access to the lake edge can be gained from Tarawera Landing just a short drive further.
